Hospital Medicine

Dr. Birger has experienced firsthand what critical access hospitals can do for their communities. After growing up in North Dakota and training in internal medicine in a large upstate New York medical center, he gravitated back to smaller communities and has practiced primarily in critical access hospitals. When he learned from his Apogee Physicians division president about the opportunity, he saw it as the perfect fit to be the director of Sublette County Healthcare’s hospital medicine program, and he assumed that role when the doors opened in August, 2025.

His wife, Christine’s, family ties to the area, dream of moving to Wyoming since childhood, and desire to use her 12 years of Respiratory Therapy experience and forthcoming nursing degree for the benefit of the community, only strengthened this. Pursuant to these dreams, they purchased a house in Pinedale 4 months after the new hospital opened. Their adult son, Kurt, was captivated as well, and his dream is to raise a family in Sublette county.

Dr. Birger’s practice experience spans more than 20 years, including clinical cardiology, 9 years in a busy internal medicine clinic, and hospitalist work. He also has passions for music and medical education, and founded 2 non-profits.

‘Learn from the Masters Music Outreach,’ is dedicated to sharing the healing power of music. His family’s outreach has already included performing for the Heritage Home piano fundraiser event, cocktail hours for the residents, and for memory care residents and hospitalized patients in their rooms.

‘EBM Truth In Medicine,’ was created to teach people how to think about healthcare. His pursuit of Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) led him to become a mentee of Dr. Gordon Guyatt, the Canadian physician who coined the term ‘Evidence-Based Medicine’ in 1990, and Dr. Guyatt is EBM TIM’s advisor.

Dr. Birger looks forward to sharing his experience and expertise with Sublette county residents for years to come.
